Welcome to your guide for the Energy Company Obligation 4 (ECO4) scheme, the latest initiative focused on energy efficiency for homeowners. If you meet certain criteria, you may be eligible to benefit from this scheme completely free of charge. That’s right, there’s absolutely no cost to you.
The ECO4 Grant Scheme
The ECO4 scheme is designed to help those in receipt of specific benefits to enhance the energy efficiency of their homes and, in turn, reduce the environmental impact. This program provides a range of free products and services aimed at increasing your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating.
If you qualify, you could receive assistance with insulation, heating solutions, and other energy-saving measures, all of which could lead to substantial savings on your energy bills.

How it works
Absolutely nothing to pay
This is not a finance deal. 100% of the costs are covered by the ECO4 Grant Scheme.
Increase your home's EPC Rating
The work carried out under ECO4 is designed to increase your homes energy efficiency. Saving you money and helping the environment.
Reduce Environmental Impact
Inefficient homes not only cost the occupants more to keep warm, they can have a negative impact on CO2 emissions which contribute to climate change.
Is ECO4 suitable for you?
This scheme is explicitly designed for individuals experiencing fuel poverty, meaning those who find themselves devoting more than 10% of their income towards energy costs.
What sets ECO4 apart from its predecessors is its commitment to enhancing EPC ratings, benefiting both homeowners and tenants. The eligibility for this grant is determined based on a combination of factors, including individual benefits, health conditions, and income levels. This multifaceted approach provides several avenues to qualify for the scheme.
To be eligible for ECO4 your home or property must first meet the following EPC criteria:
Homeowners
Your property must be in EPC bands D, E, F and G.
Private tenants (or landlords)
Your property must be in EPC bands E, F and G.
The EPC of your home or property can easily be found by visiting GOV.UK if you live in England or Wales or Energy Saving Trust if you live in Scotland, or using the links below.
Eligible Benefits
ECO4 may not be applicable to everyone. In addition to the EPC qualification, someone living at the property (it doesn’t have to be the owner occupier or the main tenant) must be on one the following ECO4 qualifying benefits:
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- Child Tax Credits (CTC)
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Housing Benefit (new eligible benefit under ECO4)
- Pension Credit Savings Credit (new eligible benefit under ECO4)
- Child Benefit (Income Related)
- Support for Low-Income Household
FAQs
For those receiving Child Tax Credit, the ECO4 scheme could be within reach. Your eligibility, however, is dependent on the amount of Child Tax Credit you receive. For instance, single parents with one child will need to receive less than £19,900 to be eligible. Other determining factors include your marital status, number of children, and your role as a parent.
If you’re not in receipt of the aforementioned benefit, don’t worry—there are other paths to eligibility. Income is a key determinant, and households earning less than £31,000 per year often qualify for the ECO4 grant. Other qualifying circumstances may include living in a home that’s susceptible to cold or having children who receive free school meals.
Moreover, if your household has been referred to the Local Authority due to financial difficulties, you may also be eligible for the grant. It’s important to note that any ECO4 application must be supported by relevant documentation. If you believe you meet any of these eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply. Successful grant approval could result in significant energy savings and enhanced comfort for your household.
If, however, your application is unsuccessful, don’t despair—there may be other energy-saving grants and schemes you can access. Always explore your options to maximise your energy efficiency.
